This was a really hard choice for me. Kir Kanos is what finally sold me on the Expanded Universe, Thrawn and Mara are "old school" EU favorites, and the Clone Wars recently got me to look into Quinlan Vos and find out just how great he was.
For me, this ultimately came down to what could be marketed just as much as a toy as it would a collector's piece.
- Yah, Thrawn is one of the coolest EU villains, but he's just a smart man in a white Imperial uniform. Granted, Sideshow is known for making some pretty simplistic designs, but I can't imagine Thrawn looking any more appealing than the slew of Imperial officer figures that clog the shelves at one of my local TRU's
- My problem with Mara is more of a variety issue. Mara has the potential to be a great figure if they loaded her up with blasters and lightsabers and a flight jacket like her design in The Emperor's Hand, but they could just as easily go to that gaudy green and gold outfit a few of the early EU pics depicted her in. I'd rather not take my chances with it.
- Snow Bunny Padme... A figure based on one of the weakest moments of the Clone Wars series? Please. Sex appeal aside, this spot should've been left open for Aayla or another Clone Wars hero.
- Quinlan Vos. Great character, but I'd really only be interested in buying him if he was in his undercover duds, not his Jedi robes.
- Asajj Ventress. I never really cared for the character much, and in my eye, she's the only character whos' already received enough figure love from Hasbro. make room for some other characters.
And thus, this leaves me with who I voted for:
- Kir Kanos. Like I said, this guy sold me on the Expanded Universe. This would be Sideshow's opportunity to strut their stuff and show just how good they can be. Full armor plating, removeable helmet, hideous lightsaber scarring on Kanos' face, a variety of ranged and melee weapons -- This guy is perfect from a collector and kids POV.
I'm surprised to see that Dash Rendar or Kyle Katarn didn't end up on their. I'm sure they would've faired very well in all of this.
